His conceptual and critical approach to the technological nature of his practice and its cultural and social implications have led to an expansion of the musical and disciplinary reaches of his work which, in addition to records and concerts, has also taken the form of orchestral works, installations, transdisciplinary performances and curatorial projects. ‘Intermetamorphosis’ is a new series of collaborative works by Mark Fell commissioned by Serralves Museum that consider the layering and interplay of technical and interpersonal systems. The title refers to a medical condition whereby individuals appear to transition into one another and between different known identities. This is taken as a starting point for a series of explorations that antagonize classical models of artistic production and cognition. The centrepiece of the series is a new performative piece featuring the North American dancer and choreographer Justin Kennedy. Occupying the gallery space over several days, it is based around recursive actions and behaviors that form in relation to technical objects, resulting in a final evening of performance that closes the work. The piece will also feature the collaboration of Digitópia Collective and the Gamelan Ensemvle of Casa da Música. As part of the series Fell will also work with Drumming - Percussion Group on a musical piece that revisits a collection of microtonal metallophones originally developed by the composer Iannis Xenakis and works for moving image will be screened at the auditorium. The growing diversity of Fell's practice is reflected in the broad spectrum of institutions that have invited him to present his work, from super-clubs such as Berghain in Berlin to the Hong Kong National Film Archive, to performances and exhibitions at institutions such as MACBA (Barcelona), ICA (London), The Royal Festival Hall (London), The Serpentine (London), Whitechapel (London), Artists Space (New York), EMPAC (Troy, New York), Issue Project Room (New York), Lampo/Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Fine Arts (Chicago), Haus der Kultur der Welt (Berlin), CCA (Glasgow). His music has been published by reference labels such as Editions Mego, Pan or Raster-Noton.
